The reconstructed Hall’s Island, located just north of the Plymouth Ave. Bridge on the Mississippi River, was a priority to the RiverFirst Initiative which aims to transform degraded industrial sites along the river to parks and habitat. In collaboration with the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, the first phase in creating these ecological benefits was the restoration of the island with natural plantings and bioengineered edge conditions. Starting in the winter of 2017-18, our field staff helped restructure the island edges and planted a diverse mixture native trees, shrubs, and perennial plugs in the summer of 2018, totaling 80 trees, 400 shrubs and 11,000 perennial wildflower seedlings. See the progress of the island, documented by the MWMO, in the slideshow above.
